The Law Offices of Zhiyu Hu, established in 1995, is one of the better-known
minority law firms in Edison, New Jersey. Edison was named after the famous
inventor Thomas Edison. The firm is widely recognized by clients for its
excellent legal services. We are engaged in general domestic and international
practice with a main concentration on immigration and nationality laws
for organizations and individuals. We are dedicated to providing high-quality
professional legal services to all clients from around the world.
Born in a remote mountainous Wanchong Village, Yingshan County, Hubei
province, China (hometown of first printing inventor BI Sheng), Mr. Zhiyu
Hu (his unofficial English first name is “Jimmy” which he
adopted from former US President Jimmy Carter ) has been admitted as an
attorney in the United States Supreme Court, States of New York, New Jersey,
District of Columbia and various other federal courts.
Mr. Hu received his B.A. Degree (in English) in 1983 from prestigious
Wuhan University, China. By virtue of his highest score on the national
law school exam in 1983, Mr. Hu was selected to study law in Germany with
the prestigious Konrad-Adenauer Foundation scholarship. He received a
German law degree (equivalent to the U.S. J.D. degree) from University
of Saarland in 1989. He also studied European and international law at
the Europa Institute of Legal Studies. With an excellent academic record
sand linguistic background, Mr. Hu was accepted for a very competitive
legal intern position with the U.N. Secretariat Legal Office in New York
City form 1989 to 1990. He attended high level UN conferences/meetings
and conducted legal researches for the United Nations and the International
Court of Justice for cases involving disputes among member states. He
studied at Harvard Law School and Vanderbilt University where he received
a J.D. degree in 1993.
Mr. Hu is an avid reader and also a writer. His essay “The Cooperation
of Youth Between the East and West” (in German) won the First Place
Prize in connection with the International Year of Youth in 1985. His
poem “Love Will Never Die” (in English) has won an Outstanding
Achievement Award and was widely circulated in the United States. He is
also a member of the Society of International Poets. His book “Elvis
and the Law” will be published soon. Many of his articles on US
law have been published in various media. He has also served as legal
advisor for many corporations/non-profit organizations and publications
(e.g., New Jersey Chinese-American Chamber of Commerce, US Chinese Chamber
of Commerce….). Based on his outstanding professionalism and contributions
to education and the society at large, Mr. Hu has been a recipient of
many honors/awards: Life Member of National Registry’s Who Is Who,
Honored Professional in Who Is Who in Executives and Business, Member
of the Roster of International Experts by the UNCTAD (UN Conference on
Trade and Development), The Modern Chinese Outstanding Achievement Award
by North American Chinese Alliance Association, Professional Excellence
and Outstanding Community Service Award from US-Hubei Business Association,
Outstanding Community Service Award from Asian American Heritage Council
in New Jersey, One of The Ten Most Outstanding Alumni in the US named
by Wuhan University in connection with the 110th Anniversary in 2003 (published
in People’s Daily Overseas edition Nov. 27, 2003).
Mr. Hu has also performed a lot of volunteer/pro bono/charitable work
to the communities. He also holds various charitable/non-compensatory
positions for various organizations (e.g., President of Wuhan University
Alumni Association –US East). The Elementary School and High School
in his hometown have been named after Mr. Hu’s first name ZHIYU
Primary School and Zhiyu High School (“Zhiyu” means “to
know the universe”) because of his global success and contribution
to his hometown. The New Street outside the Town Hall of Ledian Township
with a population of 40,000 is named “Zhiyu Street.” A scholarship
bearing his name is established to promote education for the children
in his hometown. He also established an English scholarship under the
names of LIU Shiliang and SHEN Jing, both his high school teachers. Also,
a nationwide environmental law scholarship bearing his name is established
at Wuhan University. With his generosity and significant donation, his
hometown was able to build a bridge that is very important for all the
local citizens and children. Mr. Hu has also sponsored various charitable,
sports, educational and community activities/events in the US including
New Jersey (e.g. Huaxia Chinese School). The annual Zhiyu Cup Table Tennis
Tournament in New Jersey has been established since 1999. The famous Wuhan
Cit y
Table Tennis Team which has produced several world champions has been
renamed after his name Wuhan City Zhiyu Table Tennis Team since Jan. 1,
2004.
Mr. Hu’s multi-cultural, linguistic and legal background has played
an important role in the development of his law firm. In addition to immigration
and nationality legal services, the firm practices in a variety of other
areas including intellectual property law, contract law, corporate law
including non-profit organization laws (helped many non-profit organizations),
real estate law, international business law and family law, business transactions
and commercial litigation, venture capital investment, international trade
negotiations, technology transfer & licensing, trademark & copyright,
etc. His law firm has developed from only himself in 1995 to about 10
people now. Mr. Hu often provides free legal services to the disadvantaged
and indigent people. His philosophy is “Good Wisdom; Kind Heart.”
